Charles Goff III and Dereck Higgins collaborated to create THE ELEMENTS OF STYLUS between autumn, 2007, and autumn, 2008. Their method of composition is explained below:
First, each composer extracted audio samples from his personal collection of commercially-produced records, tapes, and CDs. Goff and Higgins then modified their samples with sound effects and blended them together into various configurations. Each composer ended up with six unique recordings at the end of this process.
Then the composers modified the six recordings produced by their counterparts. Most of these modifications involved blending the recordings with original sounds created by the composers with a variety of instruments and sound effects. The composers also added more audio samples from records, tapes, and CDs to a few of the recordings. In some instances, Goff and Higgins rearranged their counterpart's recordings before blending new sounds into them.
The finished compositions Avant Advert Avatar and Emblem were posted on the TAPEGERM loop composition site ( http://www.tapegerm.com/ ) in 2007 and contain audio loops from the following artists: DJ Get Yo Fat On, Cystem, International Garbageman, and Hebephrenic. Michael Adams designed the circuit-bent Speak And Spell used in Morphabetical.
Audio building blocks used to produce THE ELEMENTS OF STYLUS were extracted from recordings made by: Porcupine Tree, Orchestra of Skin And Bone, Panasonic, XTC, Wire, Yukihiro Takahashi, Air, Captain Beyond, Europeans, Cluster, The White Birch, Kim Hiorthoy, Art Zoyd, Thighpaulsandra, Capsule 150, Seigen Ono, Ravi Shankar, Philip Glass, Randomajestiq, Maurice Ohana, Hildegard Westerkamp, Edge, Jean Derome, Andres Segovia, Todd Rundgren, The Carpenters, Genesis, The Doors, The Nazz, Roxy Music, Nico, Jo Stafford, Eric Satie, Billy Rose, Sammy Davis Jr., Pierre Albert Birot, Bill Nelson, Roy Wood, The Electric Prunes, The Monkees, Michael Nesmith, Thelonious Monk, Hazel Scott, Ahmad Jamal, and Charles Colson.
